Kongdoori Village Gulmarg: Things to Do Beyond the Ski Slopes

Kongdoori is worth visiting even if you do not ski, with mountain views, snow play, short walks, photography and the famous Gulmarg Gondola. You do not need ski gear to enjoy this high mountain spot. For families, couples and first-time visitors, the Gondola ride itself can be the main event.

One thing needs clearing up first. Kongdoori is not really a village in the usual sense. It is a bowl-shaped mountain area and a major stop on the Gulmarg Gondola route. The Phase 1 station sits at about 3,099.6 metres, or around 10,170 feet, according to JKTDC.

That is quite different from Gulmarg town, which sits much lower. So, if you see different altitude figures online, check which place they describe. Gulmarg’s base and the Kongdoori Gondola station are not the same point.

Gulmarg for Non-Skiers

Why Visit Kongdoori Gulmarg Without Skiing?

The best reason is simple: Kongdoori gives you a high mountain experience without a long climb. The Gondola takes you from Gulmarg towards Kongdoori in about 10 minutes. The ride passes through tall fir trees before the view opens to snow or green slopes, based on the season. JKTDC describes Kongdoori as a bowl-shaped area between Gulmarg and the higher Apharwat slopes.

Once you step out, you can walk, take photos, enjoy the views or play in the snow. You can also watch skiers from a safe spot. So, if one person in your group skis and the others do not, nobody has to sit in the hotel all day.

What Is Special About Kongdoori?

Kongdoori is special because it is part of the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable cars. In fact, the J&K Cable Car Corporation itself describes the Gondola as the highest cable car in the world.

The Gondola has two stages. Phase 1 takes visitors from Gulmarg to Kongdoori, while Phase 2 continues towards Apharwat. The first stage reaches about 3,100 metres, while the upper station is around 3,980 metres. This is why Kongdoori feels different from a normal viewpoint. You are not simply looking at the mountains from below. You are already high among them.

1. Enjoy the Gulmarg Gondola Ride

For a non-skier, the Gondola is usually the main attraction. The ride takes around 10 minutes to reach Kongdoori. During the climb, the view changes from forest to open mountain slopes. In winter, you may see thick snow below the cabin. In summer, the slopes turn green and the meadows look much wider.

The ride is short, so keep your camera ready. If you wait until the last minute, the best view may have already passed. The official cable car operator also asks visitors to book online and follow the time slot on their ticket. Its current notice says boarding starts at 8:00 AM, boarding closes at 3:30 PM, and the last return is at 5:00 PM. It also says the Gondola is closed on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month for maintenance. These timings can change, so check the official operator before your trip.

2. Walk Around the Kongdoori Meadow

You do not need to plan a full trek here. A slow walk around the Kongdoori area lets you enjoy the open slopes and mountain views. In summer, the meadow is green. In winter, snow changes the whole scene.

This is a good option for people who want some movement but do not want a hard hike. Take it slowly, though. Kongdoori is above 10,000 feet, and the thin air can make a short walk feel harder than expected.

If you are travelling with parents or children, watch how everyone feels before going farther. There is no need to turn a relaxed mountain day into a fitness test.

3. Play in the Snow

If you visit during the snowy months, simple snow play can be great fun. You can make snowballs, build a small snowman or just walk through the snow. JKTDC also promotes simple snow activities in Gulmarg, including snowmen, snow angels and snowball fights.

Children often need very little entertainment once they see fresh snow. Give them gloves and some space, and they will usually take care of the rest. Just remember that Kongdoori can be much colder than Gulmarg town. Wear waterproof shoes and proper layers.

4. Take Mountain Photos

Kongdoori is a strong spot for photos because the landscape opens up around the station. In winter, you get white slopes and snow-covered ridges. In warmer months, the green meadow creates a very different look. The Gondola cabins also make a nice part of the frame.

Try taking a few photos away from the busiest area. You do not need to stand at the edge of a slope for a better picture. Mountain weather can change fast, so safety should always come before the perfect Instagram shot.

5. Watch Skiers and Snowboarders

You can enjoy Gulmarg’s ski culture without skiing yourself. Kongdoori is used by skiers and snowboarders, especially in winter. JKTDC describes the area as a gathering point for winter sports and says the gentler slopes around Phase 1 are suited to less adventurous visitors.

Find a safe place away from active ski lines and watch the action. It is also a good way to understand the sport before deciding whether you want to try skiing on another day.

6. Go Higher to Apharwat

If you have enough time and feel comfortable at Kongdoori, you can consider taking Gondola Phase 2 towards Apharwat. The upper station reaches around 3,980 metres. The landscape becomes more open and alpine as you climb higher. JKTDC says the Gondola covers nearly 5 km to the upper level and places the Apharwat station at about 3,980 metres.

But do not feel that you must take Phase 2 just because you bought a Gondola ticket. If someone in your group feels dizzy, tired or breathless at Kongdoori, staying at Phase 1 is the smarter choice. Higher is not always better.

7. Consider a Short Mountain Walk

Kongdoori can also be a starting point for longer mountain walks. Some visitors continue towards the higher Apharwat area or plan walks towards Alpather. These routes need more care than a casual walk around the Gondola station. Snow, weather, altitude and route conditions can change the difficulty.

If you are not used to high-altitude walks, ask a local guide about the current route before setting off. Do not follow an old online route blindly.

8. Try an ATV or Snow Activity When Available

Adventure activities around Gulmarg can add more fun to the day. ATV rides and snow vehicles are among the activities listed in the official Gulmarg rate sheet. The published 2025-26 rate list gives ₹400 for the first 15 minutes of an ATV ride and ₹350 for each later 15-minute block. It lists snowmobile or snow-bike rates separately.

Treat these as indicative rates, not guaranteed 2026-27 prices. Rates and activity availability can change with the season. Before paying, ask where the ride goes, how long it lasts and what the final price includes.

Kongdoori Gondola Price and Other Costs

This is one area where you should check the latest rate before travelling. The official J&K Cable Car Corporation has a separate online booking system and publishes tourism rate information. Its currently available consolidated rate sheet covers 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, so I would not copy that old tariff and call it the current 2026-27 price.

For the same reason, be careful with travel blogs that quote fixed Gondola prices without giving a date. Your safest option is to check the official booking portal close to your travel date.

For a local transfer, the official 2025-26 Gulmarg rate sheet lists a ₹200 pony fare from the market to the Gondola. That is useful as a reference, but it is not the same as a taxi fare.

How to Reach Kongdoori?

You cannot drive directly to Kongdoori. First, reach Gulmarg town by road. From there, go to the Gulmarg Gondola station and take Phase 1 to Kongdoori. JKTDC confirms that the Gondola’s first stage takes visitors to the Kongdoori station at about 3,099.6 metres.

If you are staying around the main Gulmarg market, you can also use a local transfer to the Gondola station. The official rate sheet lists a market-to-Gondola pony service, but walking or local transport may make more sense depending on your hotel and luggage. I would not build your day around a very tight schedule. Leave spare time for queues, weather and Gondola delays.

Can You Camp at Kongdoori?

Do not assume that Kongdoori works like a normal camping village. The main visitor experience here is the Gondola, skiing, mountain views and outdoor activity. Overnight camping at the Gondola station should not be treated as a standard tourist facility unless an authorised operator or local authority confirms it for your dates.

If camping is your main goal, check the exact campsite, permit and overnight rules before you go. A blog saying “camping at Kongdoori” does not automatically mean you can pitch a tent anywhere.

Is Kongdoori Good for Children and Older Visitors?

It can be, but altitude needs more thought than age alone. The big benefit is that you do not need to climb thousands of feet to reach the area. The Gondola does most of that work. Once there, your family can move at a slow pace.

Still, the air is much thinner than at Gulmarg town. JKTDC specifically warns that people with heart or respiratory problems and children below five should not use the Gondola. For everyone else, watch for headache, dizziness or unusual breathlessness. If someone feels unwell, go back down rather than trying to push through it.

Best Time to Visit Kongdoori

Choose your season based on the experience you want. Winter is best for snow. This is when Kongdoori becomes a major part of Gulmarg’s ski scene. Snow play and winter photography are also at their best. Summer gives you a softer side of Kongdoori. The snow gives way to green slopes, and the open meadow becomes easier to explore. JKTDC describes Gulmarg as an all-weather destination with summer meadows and pastoral views. Autumn can also be pleasant for clear mountain views, but weather can still change quickly at this height.

How Long Do You Need at Kongdoori?

For most non-skiers, 1.5 to 3 hours at Phase 1 is enough for a relaxed visit. You can use that time to ride the Gondola, walk around, take photos and enjoy the views. Add more time if you plan to go higher or take part in an activity.

A simple day could look like this:

  • Reach Gulmarg and check the Gondola status.
  • Board Phase 1 for Kongdoori.
  • Walk around and take photos.
  • Spend time in the snow during winter.
  • Watch skiers from a safe place.
  • Decide if Phase 2 is worth doing.
  • Return well before the last Gondola.

Do not pack ten activities into one mountain stop. The view itself deserves some time.
