Gulmarg for Non-Skiers: What to Do If You’re Not Hitting the Slopes

Ritesh Kumar Mishra

August 11, 2026

Gulmarg for non-skiers is still a great idea because you can enjoy snow, mountain views, the Gondola, walks and local food without skiing. You do not need to hit the slopes to have a good day here. This matters most when you travel with a mixed group. Your partner may want to ski for four hours, while you may have no wish to stand on skis at all. That does not mean one of you has to sit in a hotel room.

Gulmarg gives you enough to build a full day around snow and views. The trick is to plan your time around the things you actually enjoy. If you are unsure about the right month, check the Gulmarg skiing season before fixing your dates.

Gulmarg for Non-Skiers

Is Gulmarg Worth Visiting If You Don’t Ski?

Yes. But your reason for visiting should be clear. If you want to ski all day, Gulmarg is a major winter sports destination. If you do not ski, you come for a different reason. You get the snowy meadows, pine forests, mountain views, Gondola ride, short walks and simple snow fun.

The village itself sits at about 2,730 metres above sea level. In winter, snow changes the whole look of Gulmarg. The green meadows turn white, while the Pir Panjal mountains form a huge backdrop. So, do not compare your day with a skier’s day. A skier may spend hours moving from one run to another. You can take your time, stop for photos, have kahwa and enjoy the view.

Ride the Gulmarg Gondola

For most non-skiers, the Gondola is the first thing I would plan. The Gulmarg Gondola reopened on June 25, 2026, after a month-long shutdown caused by a technical fault on May 25. More than 300 tourists had been stranded during that incident, and the system went through repairs and safety checks before reopening.

That means older articles saying the Gondola is still closed are now out of date. Still, check the latest operating notice before your trip because mountain transport can change with weather or maintenance. Once your dates are fixed, you can also check the Gulmarg Gondola online booking process so you know what to expect.

The two main stages give you very different views:

  • Phase 1: Gulmarg to Kongdori, about 8,530 feet
  • Phase 2: Kongdori to the upper mountain, about 12,293 feet

These figures are listed by the District Baramulla tourism page. You do not need skis for either ride. You can simply go up, enjoy the snow and take in the views. Current travel information puts the Gondola ticket at about ₹800 for Phase 1 and ₹1,000 for Phase 2, but fares can change. Check the official booking system before you pay.

Is Phase 2 Worth It for a Non-Skier?

It can be, but do not feel that you must buy it. Phase 2 takes you much higher than Phase 1. The views can be amazing on a clear day, but clouds and snowfall can block the view. You also feel the height more at the upper station. If you are unsure which ticket makes more sense, a Gulmarg Phase 1 vs Phase 2 comparison can help you choose.

This is where I would make a simple choice. If the weather is clear and you want big mountain views, go for Phase 2. If the weather is poor, Phase 1 may be enough. Do not spend more just to say you reached the highest point. The mountain does not give bonus marks for that.

Walk to Khilanmarg

If you want something quieter than the Gondola, look at Khilanmarg. Khilanmarg is a small valley near Gulmarg. Incredible India says it is about 4 km from the Gulmarg bus stop and can be reached by walking across the meadows or by pony. The route also has about 600 metres of ascent from Gulmarg.

You can see more route detail here: Khilanmarg from Gulmarg.

In winter, snow covers the area and the landscape feels very different from the summer meadow. This is a better choice for people who enjoy slow walks and views. It is not the right pick if you want a flat stroll with no effort. Snow can also make the walk harder than the distance suggests. Wear shoes with good grip and take your time. A short snow walk can turn into a tiring one if your footwear keeps slipping.

Enjoy Snow Without Skis

You do not need a big adventure plan to enjoy snow. For many Indian families, simply seeing deep snow for the first time is an experience by itself. You can make snowballs, build a small snowman, take photos or walk through fresh snow. If you want something more active, sledging and snow tubing are easy options. You can also find other simple winter experiences snow activities in Gulmarg.

Current local travel listings put sledging at roughly ₹200 to ₹500 per ride and snow tubing at about ₹200 to ₹400, though local rates can change with the season and demand. Ask the price before starting. This is a simple habit that can save you from an awkward discussion later.

Try a Snowmobile Ride When It Is Available

A snowmobile can be fun if you want some speed without learning to ski. Current travel information lists short snowmobile circuits at around ₹500 to ₹1,500, based on the route and duration. But there is an important catch. Snowmobile rides are seasonal. The Gulmarg Development Authority stopped snowmobile operations from April 13, 2026, as winter conditions were ending.

So, do not treat the price as a year-round rate. If you are travelling in winter, ask about availability and the current price on the day.

Have Kahwa and Try Kashmiri Food

Not every good Gulmarg experience needs an activity ticket. After spending time in the cold, sitting down with a cup of hot kahwa can be one of the best parts of the day. Kashmiri kahwa is a light green tea often made with saffron, spices and nuts.

You can also try local dishes such as rajma rice, rogan josh or a warm cheese paratha when available. If food is part of your plan, must know about the best restaurants in Gulmarg before you arrive, especially during a busy winter weekend. I would leave some time for food instead of filling every hour with paid activities. Your feet may thank you for it. And yes, that extra cup of kahwa feels much better when your gloves are still cold.

Walk Around the Main Gulmarg Area

You can also keep things simple and explore Gulmarg on foot. Look for snow-covered pine trees, old buildings, mountain views and ski activity around the main areas. You may see beginners taking their first lesson while experienced skiers move further up the slopes. This is also the easiest option if one person in your group wants to ski and another does not.

The skier can take a lesson while you walk around, have tea or enjoy the snow. Then you can meet for lunch and spend the afternoon together. That small bit of planning can make a mixed group much happier.

What Can You Do While Your Friends Ski?

This is one of the biggest reasons to plan ahead. Imagine your friend wants a full morning on the slopes. You do not. There is no reason for either person to change the whole trip.

A simple split can work:

  1. Morning: Your friend takes a ski lesson while you explore Gulmarg.
  2. Late morning: Meet near the Gondola area if the Gondola is running.
  3. Afternoon: Have lunch together.
  4. Later: Try sledging, snow play or a short walk.
  5. Before leaving: Stop for kahwa and take a few final photos.

The important part is agreeing on a meeting point. Do this before you split up. Snow, crowds and weak phone signals can make a simple meeting harder than you expect.

How Much Should a Non-Skier Budget?

You do not need a ski budget for a non-skiing day. Your main cost may be the Gondola. Based on current 2026 travel listings, Phase 1 is around ₹800 and Phase 2 around ₹1,000 per person. Sledging can be around ₹200 to ₹500, while snow tubing may be around ₹200 to ₹400. Snowmobile rides can range from about ₹500 to ₹1,500. These are useful planning figures, not fixed rates.

Food, transport and winter clothing come on top of this. Prices can rise during busy weekends, holidays and peak snow periods. If you are travelling with friends who also want to ski, you can see how the costs change in this Gulmarg skiing price breakdown. For that reason, I would choose two or three main experiences rather than trying to do everything.

What Should Non-Skiers Wear?

You do not need ski gear, but you do need proper winter clothes. Snow can soak ordinary shoes and trousers. Once your clothes get wet, the cold becomes much harder to enjoy.

Carry these basics:

  • Waterproof shoes with good grip
  • Warm socks and one spare pair
  • Thermal inner layers
  • Warm jacket
  • Waterproof outer layer
  • Gloves
  • Woollen cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Power bank
  • Small water bottle

Good footwear is the one item I would not try to save money on. Walking on snow in smooth city shoes is a quick way to spend the day trying not to fall. For a more complete winter clothing list, see what to wear for skiing in Gulmarg. The same warm, waterproof basics are useful even if you never ski.

Should You Worry About the Height?

You should respect the height, especially if you go to Phase 2. Gulmarg itself is already around 2,730 metres above sea level, while the upper Gondola station is around 12,293 feet. Some people feel breathless or tired at higher levels. Cold weather can make that feeling worse.

Take it slow after going up. Do not run around just because the snow looks exciting. If you feel unwell, come back down and rest. The goal is to enjoy the mountain, not to win a race against it.

When Is Gulmarg Best for Non-Skiers?

If you want snow, winter is the obvious choice. January and February are popular months for a strong snow experience, but actual snow conditions change from year to year. This is important because a non-skier does not need to chase the exact same dates as someone planning a ski holiday.

If your main goal is fresh snow, choose dates with a good winter forecast and keep some flexibility. If your main goal is green meadows and walks, summer gives you a very different Gulmarg. The best month depends on what you want to see, not just what looks best in a brochure.

Is Gulmarg Good for a Family Where Only One Person Skis?

Yes, and this may be one of the best ways to enjoy the place. The skier gets time on the slopes. The non-skier gets time for the Gondola, snow play, walks and food. You can still share lunch, photos and part of the afternoon. Families with children can use the same idea. One adult can stay with a child while another person takes a ski lesson. If children are part of your group, it is also useful to know what to expect from Gulmarg skiing for kids, even if you do not plan to ski yourself. That makes the trip feel less like a compromise and more like two versions of the same holiday.

A Simple One-Day Plan for Non-Skiers

If you have only one day, do not pack it too tightly.

  • 8:30 to 10:00 AM: Reach Gulmarg and explore the main area.
  • 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM: Take the Gondola if it is operating and the weather is clear.
  • 1:00 to 2:00 PM: Have lunch and warm up.
  • 2:00 to 4:00 PM: Try sledging, snow tubing, snow play or a short walk.
  • 4:00 PM onwards: Have kahwa, take photos and start your return journey.

The exact timing should change with your Gondola slot, weather and road conditions. Mountain days do not always follow the clock.

Gulmarg for Non-Skiers

Gulmarg for Non-Skiers Can Be More Relaxed

Gulmarg is famous for skiing, but you do not have to ski to enjoy it. The Gondola gives you a way to see the upper mountain. Khilanmarg gives you a slower outdoor option. Sledging and snow tubing add a little fun without lessons. Kahwa and local food give you a warm break. And the snowy pine forests give you plenty of reasons to simply stop and look around. That is also why Gulmarg skiing for non-skiing players should not be treated as an odd version of a ski trip. It is a different way of seeing the same mountain.

So, if your friends are putting on skis while you are reaching for your camera, do not worry that you are missing the real Gulmarg. Maybe your best part of the day is waiting just a few steps away from the slope.
